Interview in the Litterbox

WE RETURN WITH AN AMAZING INTERVIEW WITH A BIT OF FELINE IN THE MIND.

We have a special opportunity to have an interview with a wow factor of comics who was even a pro-wrestler! We welcome Rusty Gilligan to Comic Unknown! In the comic business since 1978, Rusty has been credited in various work including with Marvel, DC, Image, WP Comics Ltd, and much much more. His filming work included movies such as Spider-Man 2, Captain America and the Avengers and shows such as The Walking Dead.

So we begin this interview with Rusty about his comic series Mac and Trouble and himself .

Comic Unknown (CU): What made you want to work in the comic book industry?

Rusty Gilligan (RS): I was 8 yrs old and had just moved to California. My family was having a party and while no one was looking, I snuck out and bought a comic at the supermarket around the corner... DC's "Action Comics"... and it opened a door into a whole new world for me. I was hooked and knew right then and there that comics were in my future.

(CU): How did you come up with the story line of Mac and Trouble?

(RG): I've always loved the idea of anthropomorphic characters... Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, the Ninja Turtles, Cerebus the Aardvark, Usagi Yojimbo, etc... this just all fell together one night.

(CU): Were any of the characters inspired by another character or person?

(RG): Yes - Mac and Trouble are 2 of my real life cats (we currently have 10). Mac was born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, which effects his walking, and as a result he falls a lot... Trouble was a shelter cat that needed a home (he's huge like a raccoon). They became friends from day 1, and ever since have been a huge source of enjoyment to our family. Mac is grumpy and daring - Trouble is clumsy - but they just 'fit' together!

(CU): How many issues do you have in mind for the series?

(RG): I'm really not doing them like a 'series' - I'm basically telling their adventures through the "Mac and Trouble" comic series, the "Amazing Tails" pulp books, and the various news strips. I'm going to be releasing some graphic novels and one-shots in 2017 with them, and exploring some new media.

(CU): Will the comic's universe continue after the series?

(RG): They ARE the universe - so I don't think I'll ever end it.

(CU): What was the most difficult part in the production of Mac and Trouble ?

(RG): Finding the right creators to work along with me in the beginning. I couldn't have done this without great friends.

(CU): Are you planning on any new series after Mac and Trouble ?

(RG): Yes and no - I do have a few other titles that I'm going into production with, but they fall right in line with Mac and Trouble. I've been reviving some characters that I created years ago for Marvel and others, and adapting them for use with the Mac and Trouble stories. A few have already appeared in Amazing Tails - and the upcoming Amazing Tails novel.

(CU): Who is your favorite all time super hero/villain? Why?

(RG): I've always loved the Thing from Marvel's Fantastic Four - his story is just inspiring to me. He's strong, but gentle... has a strong sense of family... he's survived and overcome his limitations... and he's one of the most trustworthy heroes in the Marvel universe. Regardless of his strength and grumpy demeanor, there's a sort of 'sadness' that surrounds him... and a passion that drives him. There is no story quite like his anywhere. God bless Jack Kirby for sharing his creation with the world.

(CU): What is the best way readers can find Mac and Trouble?

(RG): Various ways actually! The have their own website at www.macandtrouble.com - Facebook under 'Mac and Trouble' - Twitter @macandtrouble... they're currently being published by WP Comics Ltd at www.wpcomicsltd.com

Mindless Behavior

COMIC UNKNOWN'S BOOT CAMP

Welcome back to another mission at Comic Unknown. Agents, we have a mission for you: stop a greedy warden from eating all the delicious food from the children at boot camp. Funny Business Issue One follows Agents Brian and Buddy, kids hired by the FBI to investigate cases such as go undercover to a boot camp to prevent the kids from eating slop and to find answers where no man cannot. The operation the agents must accomplish throughout the issue is very innocent and childish but for the right reasons. The silly nature of the comic allows a fresh perspective that not all comics have to be serious or mature. The issue gives the reader the opportunity to be left in glee and crack a smile while reading Funny Business. The story of Funny Business is easy to follow and very light-hearted with a simple yet fun art .

Created by the brothers Qusim and Usman Azam,  Funny Business is a ridiculous and entertaining comic any audience of any age can read. The innocent humor is fresh and original but different from the traditional super hero or sci-fi theme comics commonly seen in the comic world. The art style is very Saturday morning cartoon, reminiscent of Steven Universe or even Scott Pilgrim, but the style makes sense given the story told. We expect more of this childish humor in the upcoming issues and do not expect anything less. To follow up on more things Funny Business, check out WP Comics LTD Facebook page. Funny Business Issue One is available for purchase at WP Comics Ltd if you want to snag a copy.

Old Habits

Comic Unknown's CONfliction

Villain is the crime fiction set in a super-hero universe tale of a grim world full of heroes and as the title mentions villains. Consisting of a creative team of Joshua Metzger (Writer), Grezegorz Pawlak (Artist), Ryan Burt (Colorist), E.T. Dollman (Letterer) and Marcell Mitchell-Hicks (Editor), Villain Issue #1 tells a story about Gil Grimes, the ex-villain who wants to get his life in order and do the right thing for the world.  One night, Gil manages to save a hooker addicted to heroin from a serial killer but not all good deed goes unpunished. Mongrel a hero himself drops in to remind Gil about his past and who he really is. Gil defends himself and says it's all behind him but soon enough, temptation started knocking. An old acquaintance gave Gil a tip about a job with the biggest pay day ever. Will he give in to his old ways or will his new hero label take hold? There is also a bonus story following the hero Mongrel investigating a missing child which leads to something more menacing.

Villain is very dark and gloomy narrative, an ex-con wants to live a normal life of sorts but life itself reminds him of who he was. It's a very nature vs nurture scenario for Gil, the struggle of an ex-con going straight. Joshua Metzger made a splendid story and it picks up around Gil and his history. Grzegorz Pawlak's art follows the story's dark theme with some uncanny shadowing which can leave spine chilling reactions. The bonus feature has the same dark theme as the previous story, the only difference is the monotone art. Overall Villain Issue # 1 is a good start up issue that should continue to develop the story. The character development and inner struggles of Gil Grimes takes center stage and it makes for an interesting read. Villain Issue One can be found on Gumroad for $2.00 digitally. To catch any updates on Villain or any other comics from Evoluzione Publishing, make sure to follow them on Facebook!

Sane or Insane

WELCOME TO ANOTHER AWESOME CATALYST AT COMIC UNKNOWN!!!

We welcome a book that has been a bit different than the rest we have reviewed. Imagine twelve criminal contractors unknown to each other stumble onto one of the biggest jobs they have ever seen. Their final payday seems to be right around the corner, but does it seem too good to be true? We enter the amazing world of Sane6 where the writing, art, color, and lettering is done by Rob Cannon. Published through Rats and Crows Publishing, Sane6 was a successful Kickstarter back in February 20, 2016 and holds nothing back. As mentioned earlier, Sane 6 puts us in the middle of what a few had considered their highest paying job ever. As the story unravels, the crazy contractors begin to face some dangerous consequences and utilize their wittiness.

Sane6 puts the reader in an interesting situation where even we read the book more than once because of how good the story is. Giving the book one read does not give it enough justice to enjoy and fully immerse oneself into the story and art. Unlike most books out there, Sane6 #1 Catalyst  does not require direct clean art to get its message across, in fact, the story benefits from it. Rob Cannon successfully achieved a book where having this form of art compliments the story in such a way that one will submerge themselves into the story and wont return until the book is closed. Sane6 catalyst also includes a prequel to the story known as Sane6 Wreckage. The world is full of horrible little devils, and Sane6 allows the reader to let those little devils run around for our entertainment. Sane6 #1: Catalyst can be purchased either printed or digitally for the reduced prices of $7.19 and $4.49 respectively at Rats & Crows or at Comixology at $4.99. Make sure to follow Sane6 on Facebook to keep yourself up to date with any news including the upcoming release of Sane6 #2 Aquisition.

Alter-Interview

WELCOME BACK TO AN AWESOME INTERVIEW HERE AT COMIC UNKNOWN!

We had the opportunity to ask Caleb Thusat the creator of Alter-Life a few questions on his book and himself! So sit back and enjoy this awesome interview with Caleb.

Comic Unknown: What made you want to work in the comic book industry?

Caleb Thusat: I came to comics later than most people do. I didn’t think much of superhero stories other than the ones I saw in movies in the 80’s and 90’s, but I watched a lot of the X-men cartoon while growing up. My passion for comics didn’t come until I read The Watchmen. Alan Moore opened my eyes and imagination to what the comic medium could be. I worked in independent film for a number of years, and ideas are limited by budget and physical restraints. My ideas were too large for indie film, so I decided to bring them to an artist and create comics instead.

CU: How did you come up with the story line of Alter-Life?

CT: Alter-Life is sort of a combination of stories I have been toying with since I was in college. I knew I wanted to write something about alternate existences and the mystery of human consciousness. The story is rooted in some of my personal experiences and some of my fears. Death is a universal topic of fear and mystery, and I am always exploring new ways of writing about it. I also had some rough years where I felt trapped and needed an escape from my job. Alter-Life was born out of all of this.

CU: Were any of the characters inspired by another character or person?

CT: Jake in Alter-Life is loosely based on Rob Gordon from High Fidelity with pieces of me thrown in here and there. He’s a bit quirky and obsessed with music and video games. But he is a broken man, seeking answers and redemption for past regrets.

CU: How many issues do you have in mind for the series?
CT: This is going to be 5 issues. I’m actually in talks right now to get the full series made as a complete graphic novel and sidestep the whole issue by issue process.

CU: Will the comic's universe continue after the series?
CT: There is definitely a universe being created here, but it’s not what is seems to be in issue #1. There are many twists and turns, and I don’t want to spoil anything, but let’s just say Jake’s story is just the beginning.

CU: What was the most difficult part in the production of Alter-Life?

CT: I’m just a writer and creator. I came into this with zero connections in the comic industry, so I would say the most difficult part is finding an Artist who, not only can give you want you want, but is willing to work with someone new to the comic world. I was fortunate to find Katrina Kunstmann. I think she lives inside my brain because every time she sends me a page it is almost exactly what I had pictured. Running a Kickstarter is hard too. It requires your full attention for the length of the campaign, and you can hardly think of anything else, but if you’re willing to put in the time, you can be successful at it.

CU: Are you planning on any new series after Alter-Life?

CT: Well, ZED issue 1 has just been released. I have been working on completely writing issues 2-5 of Alter-Life, and I wanted to keep readers happy, so I decided to start ZED. It’s way different than Alter-Life, and is much more fun and comical. I also wanted to show people that I have some depth and can write both deep and serious and fun and humorous. After ZED and Alter-Life I do have a number of other stories I am working on, but they are early on at this point. For now, I am working to get the Alter-Life graphic novel produced and will continue to write ZED and release it issue by issue on Kickstarter.

CU: Who is your favorite all time super hero/villain?
Why?

CT: Superman is one of my favorites. I love characters that have been adapted to reflect the times, and Superman has one of the most versatile stories. It’s simple, but can be used to tell such diverse and interesting stories.

CU: What is the best way readers can find Alter-Life?

CT: Right now you can only buy Alter-Life off my website www.villagecomicbooks.com. However, issue #1 will be up on Comixology very soon.

Chase to Nebulous

WELCOME BACK TO THE DESTINED JOURNEY AT COMIC UNKNOWN!
Scavenger Issue Two
Written by Kim Roberts
Art by Megan Huang

We return to the world of Arin, a desolate planet where the rich are freely enjoying their lives in the Floating City. We find our protagonist Aiden right where we left off from Issue 1 of Scavenger in search for answers. With the death of Aunt Maude in Tin City, the only option he has is to go to The Willow to search for the truth on what is going on. Trouble is not that far behind him considering that the Floating City is tracking his every move with the visions Laverne has with Aiden and  the Acurvina plant he is carrying. Finding out the truth about his mother and the innate magic he may possess, Aiden and company must escape Caleb and his fleet as they have been chased all the way to Nebulous a city filled with thieves. Aidan is now on the journey to find out what he must do to save his mother in Floating City and clearly become the hero he will soon be.

Scavenger Issue Two leaves the readers at the start of a journey which seems will eventually put us in a battle of brawn and enchantments. The artist's hard work puts us in the start of a new series as if it is a cartoon one may find on cable television and having us frantically waiting for the next episode the following week. The only difference between that and the comic is that the time frame is much longer than a week. We are hopeful to see how the story telling of Scavenger builds throughout the series and what other surprises comes out of the narrative. So far the Scavenger series is definitely a series to be keeping track of the release dates as well as enjoying the developing world of Arin. Scavenger Issue Two was released yesterday on Comixology for $1.99. Check out Markosia's website for any other comic or graphic novel they may be releasing in the near future.

A Few Ticks After Midnight

COMIC UNKNOWN AND THE SUPER HERO MURDER MYSTERY

CREATED BY: TYLER JAMES & CESAR FELICIANO

WRITER: TYLER JAMES

ARTIST: CESAR FELICIANO

COLORER: GUILLERMO UCHA

COVER: CP WILSON III

COVER COLORER & LOGO DESIGN: TY TYNER

EDITOR: STEVEN FORBES & STEVE COLLIE

Welcome to the story of The Red Ten, a super hero murder mystery mini series told in ten parts. The Red Ten came from the minds of Tyler James and Cesar Feliciano and it is essentially the "And then there were none" story mixed into the super hero genre. The story starts off straight into the action between Red the world's greatest detective and what we believe to be her nemesis Oxymoron. Red is defeated and is shot at point blank range leaving no chance for survival. The location shortly becomes the crime scene no one would have expected and now everyone is in mourning, including The Alliance. Quickly we learn of the members of this superteam and the extremities they will go to find the person who killed their fellow member. Consisting of 10 other members, The Alliance includes: Orion, Throttle, Master Mage, Androika, Magnitude, Bellona, Mazu, Mold, Justice America, and Crimson. After thorough investigation, The Alliance finally concluded with some intel stating that Oxymoron is hiding in a secluded island in the South Pacific.

As the Alliance begin to search the abandon building on the island they begin to notice strange things. Unfortunately, things go south as soon as Androika's OS begins to crash causing a huge explosion only leaving nine heroes left. The Red Ten Issue One is merely the tip of the iceberg that has use flipping through the pages and going onto the next issue. It's writing and art has the perfect blend for a super hero murder mystery. The Red Ten Issue one gives us the idea of Oxymoron being comparable to a Joker that is willing to do anything and kill anyone. The Red Ten Issue one is well worth the $0.99 price tag on Comixology and while the single issue is sold out, you can order the Hard Cover of consisting of the first 5 issues and Issue Zero for $29.99. You can find more information on this series from the publisher's sire Comixtribe as well as their Facebook Page.

Mega Underling

WELCOME TO COMIC UNKNOWN'S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM!

We return today with a very interesting one shot that has not only a unique art style, but a distinct writing style as well. We enter the world of Ultra Minion. Written by Lukasz Kowalczuk and art by Macie Czapiewski, Ultra Minion the silent black and white apocalyptic world where minions are kept captive by an evil overlord and are used as test subjects for their heinous research and bidding. It wasn't until one of the minions was used in one of the experiments and an accident occurred causing him to transform into the Ultra Minion and begin to wreak havoc onto his tyrants. A great battle ensues and many lives were lost on both sides which finally leads to the ultimate fight between Ultra Minion and the Overlord. The book does a beautiful job narrating but instead of with dialogue, the book utilizes with movement of the characters and body language to portray the narrative.

Czapiewski and Kowalczuk have successfully created a comic that can be understood in any language. The subtle moments throughout the panels and pages could be missed out at first glance but the amount of work and precision the creative team had to input to Ultra Minion reaches a level professionalism that is incomparable. Ultra Minion is a straightforward science fiction story of a great battle between the minions and the overlord and steadily paces throughout the pages. Ultra Minions definitely seems like a difficult comic to make but it clearly paid off at the end. It is an amazing story told through a different yet assertive way of story telling. Ultra Minions is available for purchase in both physical and digital format at WP Comics Ltd and you can check out Lucasz Kowalczuk Facebook page for any new books he is working on.

The Getaway

WELCOME TO COMIC UNKNOWN'S ESCAPE PLAN!
Created and Written by Kevin Truglio
Artwork and Lettering by Przemyslaw R. Dedelis

Welcome back to another chapter of Chem 19 with Comic Unknown! We return to the series at issue seven and see that Dr. Wagner is still tied up and held captive by the Cartel. Dr. Wagner needs to figure out what he can do to escape but there was an unlikely person to help him. With the help of Donkey and his addiction to the drug, Donkey managed to sneak into the building and he begins his search. Uncertain whether we wants to find the drug more or the doctor himself, Donkey finds the mother load! After a few hurdles Donkey had to overcome, he managed to stumble upon Dr. Wagner.  Now it is time for them to escape and they are facing obstacles to be home free. We have been following Dr. Wagner's unfortunate adventure for some time now and we have been hooked on what to expect. While the story has had seven issues to develop, we are still running through this dystopia to find the cure to save Dr. Wagner's daughter. Even though Vivian wasn't seen in this issue, it puts an interesting question into perspective: how much time does she have left?

Bang! Bang!
Jason has gone through hell and back to find any amount of dosage of the deadly drug for his daughter and now needs to find a way to escape the city. Having issue seven come to an end, we continue to ponder on how Dr. Wagner will return to his daughter and whether will he find a cure not just use the drug to prolong death. Kevin Truglio and Przemyslaw R Dedelis has formed the degraded world of Chem 19 and has allowed us to follow a father and his unstoppable will to do anything he can to save his daughter. Chem 19 Issue Seven is now available on Comixology at $0.99 digitally and will soon be available physically on IndyPlanet (So keep an eye out!). King's Armor

WELCOME TO COMIC UNKNOWN'S INTERGALACTIC ADVENTURE!

Armor-I Creative Team
Writer: Marcel Dupree
Penciler: Carlos Trigo
Inker: Gulliver Silva
Colorist: Andrea Celestin
Letterer: ET Dollman

Baranzu Creative Team
Writer: Marcel Dupree
Artist: Joel Cotejar
Colorist: Franco Reisco
Letterer: ET Dollman

We enter the world of Armor-I by following the new kid to the school Jason King. Being the new kid at school can be hard sometimes. You would have to make new friends, watch out for the jerks and find and maintain a status quo. On Jason King's first day he managed to clash with  the school jocks who were bullying a student. After the altercation, he finds out those same jocks will be his teammates on the school's football team. Thinking that he will settle their differences, the jocks invite him to hang out in the woods after football practice. Meanwhile, in a far away galaxy, a scientist Kizan is on the run from Lord Novaden. Kizan is carrying a weapon that can tip the scales of a galactic war to their favor. However, the scientist's ship was shot down and crashed landed on Earth in a wooded area.  After football practice, the jocks drove Jason to the secret spot in the woods to what he believes is to make amends. Unfortunately, they ditched him in the forest to fend for himself and find his way out. His life soon intersects wth Kizan as he stumbles upon Kizan's ship. What will be in store for Jason King now that he crossed paths with Kizan? With the mysteries surrounding the origin of Kizan and the secret weapon, Marcel Dupree leaves the story where it is at to catch our eye and give a little tease.

Armor I Issue 1 has a solid story somewhat similar to how Hal Jordan obtained his ring. Jason King has already been seen fighting for the little guys and we hope for a great superhero comic since he finds a game-changing weapon to whoever possess it. We see by the end of the issue that  the character open to possibilities he would never have expected. We are hopeful to see what history Kizan and Lord Novaden has had, let alone more information on this great war going on. Carlos Trigo and Andrea Celestini gives the art style for this comic a very polished and playful style like a cartoon animation you watch every Saturday morning. The comic as a whole is very compelling and leaves the reader wondering about King's future. As an added bonus, there is an additional comic at the very end called Baranzu about a family visiting Japan with kids being kids, running around causing chaos and accidentally releasing a spirit. What will happen to family now that the spirit has been released? Overall this comic has great stories to offer accompanied with awesome art and we definitely hope to see more from these creators. Armor-I is available digitally for $2.00 on Gumroad. Make sure to follow Evoluzione Publishing on Facebook as well as Marcell Dupree on Twitter!

Medal of Honor

WELCOME TO ANOTHER EXPLODING REVIEW AT COMIC UNKNOWN!

We enter the desert and follow Ken Baker, a Staff Sergeant aka Phantom in  Patriot-1. Baker is a spec ops soldier who finds himself in sticky situation involving the CIA. It started when his team including his team leader Janson and himself were on their last escort mission in Afghanistan since the war is almost over. The team was ambushed only Janson and Baker were left alive and captured. They were interrogated about an operation called Quisling which Baker had no intel to offer. Unfortunately, team leader Janson noted his involvement and everything went south from there. Janson's involvement essentially got him killed by the captors and now Baker is the sole survivor. Successfully escaping, Baker and the CIA have a common goal to avenge Janson's death as well as completing the same mission that Janson died because of his involvement. The road that lies ahead of Baker won't be easy, it contains deception and conspiracies this will affect his resolve as a soldier. Is he in over his head? Patriot-1 is a lengthy interesting read, you can easily lose track of time as you keep turning pages while reading it. Kevin Powers did an excellent job with the story and it blends very well with the art.

Comparable to Captain America's patriotism, Sergeant Baker is one of those rare soldiers who will do what is right regardless of how hard it may seem. His love for his country and willingness to sacrifice for it makes him into a powerhouse. The antagonist in this series is one readers will almost sympathize. His tenacity for his goal, although not the best of goals,  was a plus considering villains tend to have either sobbing back stories or they just want to the world to burn. Dexter Wee art approach engulfs the reader in this fantastic and gritty world. The readers can visually comprehend what is happening in the story as it doesn't require them to take a second glance at a page to understand. The book could not have been completed if it wasn't for Donna Gregory's and Keith Dallas' talents for the coloring and editing to bring the story home. This creative team made a marvelous story and should continue working together (either another issue or something totally fresh). Patriot won a bronze IPPY Award for Graphic Novels (Drama/ Documentary) and is clearly a keeper for those that enjoy the genre. Successfully funded on Kickstarter on August 1, 2014, Patriot-1 is available for purchase for $20.00 with free shipping including the digital copy and even a Patriot-1 bookmark! Readers can follow Patriot-1 on Facebook as well as  Kevin Powers with any upcoming projects on Facebook and Twitter!
