Welcome to another great interview at Comic Unknown! We introduce Jason Lenox, the creator of Ugli Studios and Lords of the Cosmos

Comic Unknown: Welcome, Jason Lenox and thank you for spending some time with us at Comic Unknown to talk about your book. How did you come up with Lords of the Cosmos? 

Jason Lenox: An appreciation and enjoyment for classics from my childhood-Three Cartoons stick out Filmation's Flash Gordon, Thundarr the Barbarian and Masters of the Universe were three standouts that inspired!

CU: What made you want to work in the comic book industry?

JL: I think the medium is endless, and I enjoy working in it.

CU: How many issues do you have in mind for the series?

JL: At least 6

CU: Will the Lords of the Cosmos's universe continues after the series? 

JL: I think so. Well, at least I hope so!!

CU: What was/is the most difficult part in the production of Lords of the Cosmos? 

JL: Being a manager to a project, not just an artist

CU: Are there any other projects you are currently working on or plan on working on in the near future?

JL: An Adult Satanic Coloring Book is in the works right now as well as Lords of the Cosmos #3.

CU: How did you meet your creators for Lords of the Cosmos?

JL: Jason Palmatier was a client at an old job, and Dennis Fallon was a friend of his.

CU: When working with deadlines, do you have a specific strategy to best manage your time efficiently?

JL: Tell people NO more often than you tell them YES!! Seriously, you have to be careful how much work you accept, and what is the work you are doing- editing out the projects that are not furthering your big picture goals is key to being efficient as a creative, distractions are everywhere!

CU: Who is your favorite all-time superhero/villain? Why?

JL: Conan the Barbarian- he lives by his own rules, fights the good fight, and more often than not, gets the girl in the end- he is a classic character that has thrived as a pulp character and also as a great comic book read for decades!

CU: Who has been the biggest influence on you in the comic industry?

JL: Alejandro Jodorowsky- he is an amazing creator that has stuck to his vision in comics, film etc. whether people liked it or not- he succeeds on the strength of his belief in his own vision.

Two Sides to Every Coin

Comic Unknown would like to introduce the retro styled, Lord of the Cosmos. Set on a world called Aiden, the citizens use the power of the planet to fuel their machines. Society has created what they believe is utopia by combining their knowledge of magic and technology. As the natives achieve peace and prosperity throughout the majority of the planet, their ignorance is both their joy and potential demise. While the people of Aiden completely disregard the waste they leave behind as they live in their castles. The dark side of their utopia begins to creep up with those who were exiled from the promised land known as the Disciples of Umex in the outer lands and slums. There are many whispers about Umex's origin but was all pedestrian until now that has awakened from his long slumber and is ready to claim Aiden as his own. He calls upon the help of his underlings to wreak havoc across the planet. Will Umex wish come to pass or will his it be nothing but a dream?

Using what they know and love from the 80's Dennis Fallon, Jason Lenox, and Jason Palmatier forged Lord of the Cosmos. The essence of the first issue suggests that there's always a dark side, a consequence of every action people take even if they're unaware of it. Lenox created the concept and penciled the comic but Fallon and Palmatier brought this to life. The story is extraordinary in all the right ways and leaves the readers wanting more. The characters themselves were beautifully designed by all three of theses artist and each has their own history which can be seen in the issue. The illustration is brilliant and the black and white color scheme is very old school. This art style is seen throughout all the stories and it serves well. Lord of the Cosmos is elegant, immense and fantastic. It was fully funded on Kickstarter on September 26, 2016, but it never hurts to get more supporters. Thirteenth Painted Courier

WELCOME BACK TO YET ANOTHER STORY OF THE COMIC UNKNOWN ANTHOLOGY

This week's anthology of reviews is from none other than Ugli Studios. 

Ugli Studios #2 starts off with a bang with a story from the fictitious Wild West named “The Painted Ladies of San Quentin”. The story stars Elijah Holman, a pastor turned gun-toting vigilante who’s on the run from assassins after his head for witnessing a land grab with a few more casualties than he should have seen. That’s the gist of it without spoiling much more if it, but I quite like it. It’s a story that’s a throwback to old pulp stories of yore and has an array of colorful characters that have a Tarantino-esque feel to them. The story is presented with gratuitous amounts of stylized violence and ends as fast as it starts.

The next story, “The Courier” slaps you in the face by dropping us in the middle of a chase scene between a man with an ancient relic and alien insects. The story, while short, has a satisfying end that leaves you wondering asking questions like, how did this chase start? Who’s this man? And what of the ominous ending? “The Courier” has potential for growth considering the cliffhanger that was left for us to ponder on.

The final story titled “Thirteen” that starts the story of a g-man looking figure who’s made clones and is presenting his latest “brother” named “Thirteen” and things go south fast. Without spoiling anything, I can say the art is fantastic, it has the visual styling that oozes Sin City. Unfortunately the story is even briefer than the other two. “Thirteen” looks fantastic, stylized art that just pops out and grabs your attention. The story however seems to just end so abruptly it leaves you thirsting for more but it seems the story ties itself up and leaves you out to dry.

Ugli Studios #2 seems like a great smorgasbord of potentially greater stories if they were to be fleshed out as standalones because it’s such a shame that they ended so fast. Xeno Habilis Exterminus & Grizelda

Welcome back to another story of the Comic Unknown Anthology!!

Today We Will Be Introducing

Ugli Studios Presents Volume 1!

  Volume 1 consists of two different stories but unlike most stories, both stories take a different turn in the story telling. Through the Eyes of Grizelda and The Great Vermin were created by Jason Lenox and David Paul, illustrated by Jason Lenox, Dani Kaulakis, Damon Haigh, Joseph Freistuhlerand, and colored by Dani Kaulakis.

 Through the Eyes of Grizelda takes place in what was once a golden empire known as Xendria but now ravaged by centuries of war. We follow Grizelda, a feline companion to a powerful and feared Necromancer Amon Kadesh. Amon Kadesh is the stagnant ruler of this empire and we find him in a battle with those brave enough to cause an uprising and end his reign. But the necromancer would never give up so easily; he has the ability to call out the Great Beast and end this battle.

 Instead of what most books would do and follow a good hearted hero in a quest to stop an evil entity, this tale does the complete opposite. It follows the vessel for the Great Beast of the Necromancer! While Grizelda easily makes her way back to the necromancer, we see the valiant warriors storming into a castle full of the living dead and cutting their way to Amon Kadesh. Right when they believe they have victory in their hands, Amon Kadesh chants the spell to release the Great Beast. In just a split moment, the tables have turned in this epic battle. This is an original and awesome story to catch and could easily continue as a stand alone comic.

 The Great Vermin follows Xeno Habilis Exterminus team leader Veer and his company with a mission to exterminate the scourge species X2987. They land on the planet that has these “Great Vermin” to eradicate them because they swarm across the stars like locusts, spreading famine, pollution, and disease. Without going into too much detail, this story was short, sweet, and had an awesome twist. While it is only a few pages, it definitely did the job. It is a great read and follows the quality over quantity guidelines that we rarely see these days.

 All in all, Ugli Studios Presents Volume 1 is an anthology that is both surprising and impressive. Each story had its own turn of events in which does not follow the norm, and it worked out perfectly. Ugli Studios Presents Volume 1 is a full color comic with some great pin-ups, and is available with autograph and shipping included for $6 or digital copy for $2.99.
