Single Father Superhero

WELCOME TO ANOTHER ADVENTURE OF COMIC UNKNOWN!

Today we have had a chance to review a comic that is a blast from the past.  From our very first interview, today we will talk about the Single Father Hero, Bedbug!

Buddy Sprang, the professional crime fighting entrepreneur known as Bedbug always wanted to be a super hero as a child. With an unfortunate event resulting in an irreversible spinal injury at a young age,  Sprang was told he could never walk again.  That didn't stop Sprang from later developing high tech jumping boots that allows him to use his motor skills, let alone becoming the hero everyone loves in the city of Silicon. With Issue One being completely sold out, Bedbug was clearly a hit! Issue one has four stories: Who He Is And How He Came To Be, Teacher's Pet, Invitation, and It Happened At Twilight.

Who he is and how he came to be drops us into an action scene where Bedbug is in progress of stopping a pair of baddies while showing the reader Bedbug's origin. With the art by Sam Ellis and story, colors, and lettering by Scott Rogers, Who he is and how he came to be is probably my favorite out of the stories. Its art and colors are eye catching and the combination with the writing gives this character life on the paper.

We are quickly drawn into what the creator calls A Bedbug Bugbite, in which are one page stories with this one being called Teacher's Pet. The story is by Chad Jones and art by Scott Rogers. From the this transition, although small, we see that Scott Rogers not only does the writing but can also show a thing or two in the art. The art in the story not only reminds me of the style of how newspaper comic are drawn, it also gives the impression of either Archie, Calvin & Hobbs or Jughead inspire the art style (in which I have no complaints). For a single page comic, I enjoyed it more than i expected, it shows the love Buddy has for Elvira and vice versa.

The longest story is called Invitation which is the story and art is by Scott Rogers. In the story we see a new ally of Bedbug named Blue Tiger. Infused with a mystical sapphire in his chest, he help those in need with the super natural powers from the gem. In Invitation, Blue Tiger and Begbug find an invitation for all baddies to the "Crime Spree of the Century" after defeating the Grave Robber. Coincidentally, the invitation lands on the same day as Buddy's daughter's invite to a sleep over she has been wanting to go. While the crime spree invite isn't exactly what it seems to be, we see BB attempt to put a stop into it. With many villainous characters introduced, Invitation was biggest piece of the pie where we begin to develop the the Bedbug universe. It was a fun story with art that has the old school crayon or color pencil feeling to it.

Lastly, we have another of Bedbug's Bugbite short called It Happened at Twilight. Written by Erik Burman and art done by Scott Rogers, the story has a humorous take on the recently popular vampire movies. It pokes fun in an innocent way where any reader will have a laugh at.

In this day and age, we don't get to see standalone stories in the comic book world much. The short stories allows all audiences enjoy the book and reminds us that a good story does not necessarily have to be a four issue long story for us the reader to have a good time reading. It is aimed for everyone to enjoy and enjoy they shall. While issue one is officially SOLD OUT! Look for Bedbug #2 coming Spring 2014. For any updates of Bedbug, check out his site here!

Thirteenth Painted Courier

WELCOME BACK TO YET ANOTHER STORY OF THE COMIC UNKNOWN ANTHOLOGY

This week's anthology of reviews is from none other than Ugli Studios.

Ugli Studios #2 starts off with a bang with a story from the fictitious Wild West named “The Painted Ladies of San Quentin”. The story stars Elijah Holman, a pastor turned gun-toting vigilante who’s on the run from assassins after his head for witnessing a land grab with a few more casualties than he should have seen. That’s the gist of it without spoiling much more if it, but I quite like it. It’s a story that’s a throwback to old pulp stories of yore and has an array of colorful characters that have a Tarantino-esque feel to them. The story is presented with gratuitous amounts of stylized violence and ends as fast as it starts.

The next story, “The Courier” slaps you in the face by dropping us in the middle of a chase scene between a man with an ancient relic and alien insects. The story, while short, has a satisfying end that leaves you wondering asking questions like, how did this chase start? Who’s this man? And what of the ominous ending? “The Courier” has potential for growth considering the cliffhanger that was left for us to ponder on.

The final story titled “Thirteen” that starts the story of a g-man looking figure who’s made clones and is presenting his latest “brother” named “Thirteen” and things go south fast. Without spoiling anything, I can say the art is fantastic, it has the visual styling that oozes Sin City. Unfortunately the story is even briefer than the other two. “Thirteen” looks fantastic, stylized art that just pops out and grabs your attention. The story however seems to just end so abruptly it leaves you thirsting for more but it seems the story ties itself up and leaves you out to dry.

Ugli Studios #2 seems like a great smorgasbord of potentially greater stories if they were to be fleshed out as standalones because it’s such a shame that they ended so fast. Ugli Studios Presents Volume 2 is a full color comic with some great pin-ups, and is available with autograph andshipping included for $7 or digital copy for $2.99

The Endtale

WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER GREAT ADVENTURE OF COMIC UNKNOWN!!!

While the last time we spoke about Solestar, we just did a basic recap of all five issues. Today we will focus on issue 1. With Siike Donnelly as the creator and writer, we have a large amount of talent for the penciling, inking, and coloring. It has 9 different pencilers, just one inker on the tenth page, and 7 different colorists. This book is definitely unique in many aspects. Issue One The Endtale starts off with a narrative from Isamu Takahashi also known as Solestar. He begins to reminisce about his beloved Ashley when she was still alive. While visiting her grave, he senses an ominous storm heading towards the city. By the time he got close enough, he realized that inside the storm is a heartbeat, a woman's heartbeat.

Unfortunately he recognizes the heart beat to Boom, a young American woman with the ability of manipulating electricity around her. While still upset at him for sending her to a holding facility, she informs him that she is looking for her partner. To avoid any major confrontation, he quickly outsmarts her and puts her to sleep with a simple pinch on the neck. Assuming the confrontation was over, he planned send her back to the holding facility. He then gets zapped in the eyes by someone else. Caught off guard with the surprise attack, Solestar soon realize that he's in a predicament with both Boom and Cloud!

A story with a good way to end off an issue, The Endtale would make any reader want for more. With much more to come, Solestar proves itself with a strong beginning and having a spectrum of different art styles does not hinder it in any way. Issue one has a unique narrative lettering design in which I find truly awesome. Solestar Issue 1 The Endtale will be available around the Thanksgiving holiday so be ready!
